Have you ever witnessed a baptism and felt a stirring in your own spirit? On Sunday, we celebrated two young women's public declaration of faith, a beautiful reminder of the new life Christ offers. But as we rejoice in new beginnings, we also need to be reminded of the seriousness of our commitment. The story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 serves as a stark warning about the dangers of deception and the true meaning of a life surrendered to God.
The early church was marked by generosity and unity. Believers shared their resources, demonstrating a powerful commitment to one another. Ananias and Sapphira, however, chose a different path. They sold a piece of property but secretly kept back a portion of the money, presenting the rest as the full amount. This wasn't just about money; it was about deception. Their actions betrayed the very foundation of trust and generosity that defined the early church.

This story forces us to ask ourselves some difficult questions. What does it truly mean to embrace the unleashed life of faith that baptism symbolizes? It means we can't have it both ways. We can't experience the fullness of God's blessings while clinging to dishonesty in our hearts. Like Ananias and Sapphira, we can't pretend to be fully committed while harbouring hidden agendas or secret sins.
Baptism is a public declaration of our "sold out" status for Christ. It's a promise to live a life of integrity, surrendered fully to God. But this story reminds us that baptism isn't just a one-time event; it's a daily process. It's a constant choice to align our inner lives with our outward actions. Are we living with integrity in our church community? Do we contribute to an atmosphere of honesty, or do we engage in gossip or deceit?
Reflection: Take some time today to reflect on your own baptism. Are there any areas in your life where you're holding back from God? Are there any hidden sins or deceptions that you need to bring into the light? Ask God to reveal these areas to you and give you the courage to surrender them fully to Him.
