Turning Hard Ground: Faithful Witnessing When Facing Rejection

Sharing our faith can be daunting. One of the biggest fears? Rejection. What happens when we share the most important message we know, and the person isn't interested, or even hostile?


Paul faced this constantly. Even as he powerfully proclaimed the Kingdom in Rome, the reaction was mixed: "Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe." (Acts 28:24 NIV). He even quoted the prophet Isaiah, acknowledging that some hearts would be calloused, unwilling to see or hear (Acts 28:25-27).


It reminds me of trying to cultivate hard, rocky ground. Sometimes you hit a rock so firmly embedded, your tool stops dead. You can keep pounding away, getting frustrated, or you can move on to the soil next to it. Often, by working the ground around the rock, you eventually loosen it, making it easier to move later.



Sharing the gospel can be like that. We encounter "hard ground" – hearts resistant to the message. Jesus himself told his disciples, "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet." (Matthew 10:14 NIV).


This isn't about giving up easily, but understanding that rejection in sharing your faith does not mean failure; but it redirects the mission. Our role is faithful witness, not forced conversion. Sometimes, we plant a seed, sometimes we water, sometimes we simply pray for the "rock" to be loosened. We trust the Holy Spirit to do the work in His time. Perhaps by moving on and sharing with someone whose heart is ready, we create an environment where the previously resistant person might soften later.


Don't let the fear of rejection paralyse you. An "unleashed" faith understands that God's plan is bigger than any single response. We are called to be faithful ground-breakers, dusting ourselves off after setbacks and moving forward, empowered by the Spirit, ready to share with the next person.

  • Has the fear of rejection held you back from sharing your faith?

  • Think of a time you encountered "hard ground." Can you entrust that person to God and pray for their heart to soften, while remaining open to sharing with others?


Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me courage to share Your Good News, even when facing potential rejection. Help me to be a faithful witness, trusting You with the results. Grant me wisdom to know when to persist and when to move on, always praying for hearts to be softened. Don't let setbacks define me, but empower me by Your Spirit to keep planting seeds of hope.
